Update (October 2026): Worlds 2026 is over. Erich Munis won the men's open class for his seventh world title, Gabi Pessanha took super-heavy and open-class double gold, and Tainan Dalpra won his fourth title to complete the IBJJF Grand Slam. Nicholas Maglicic is the official men's heavyweight champion after Rider Zuchi was disqualified for an anti-doping violation in September, and Sarah Galvão moved up to open-class silver. Alliance (men) and Atos (women) won the team titles. Every champion is in our Worlds 2026 results post. The rest of this guide records how the 2026 edition worked; dates for 2027 are not yet announced (see our IBJJF 2027 calendar).

IBJJF World Championship 2026

The World IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship is the most prestigious tournament in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Held annually since 1996 and at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California since 2007, Worlds is the event every serious competitor circles on the calendar. Winning a World title at any belt level is a career-defining achievement, and for black belts, it represents the absolute pinnacle of the sport.

The 2026 World Championship took place May 28-31 at the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid (Walter Pyramid) in Long Beach. This guide records how the 2026 edition worked for competitors, coaches, and spectators: registration, schedule, venue, travel, and preparation. For the rest of the season, see the 2026 IBJJF tournament schedule.

Why the World Championship Matters

The IBJJF Worlds is not just another tournament. It is the single most important event in competitive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and has been since its inception.

The Pinnacle of the Sport

  • The most prestigious title in Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, period
  • First held in Rio de Janeiro in 1996, establishing the gold standard for BJJ competition
  • At the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach since 2007, now the spiritual home of competitive BJJ
  • Winning Worlds defines legacies -- Marcus "Buchecha" Almeida holds 13 men's titles, and Gabi Pessanha passed Beatriz Mesquita's women's record of 10 at Worlds 2026 and now has 12

Competition Quality

  • The deepest brackets of any IBJJF event at every belt level
  • Competitors travel from every continent to compete
  • Black belt divisions feature the absolute best grapplers on the planet
  • The culmination of the IBJJF Grand Slam series (Europeans, Pans, Brasileiro, Worlds)

Career Impact

  • A World title at any belt level carries weight for the rest of your career
  • Black belt Worlds gold is the highest individual achievement in BJJ
  • Major ranking points that determine seedings and future qualification
  • The final event of the IBJJF Grand Slam, completing the most coveted sweep in the sport

Did You Know: The IBJJF World Championship is the final leg of the Grand Slam series. Winning gold at Europeans, Pans, Brasileiro, and Worlds in the same season is the rarest and most celebrated achievement in competitive BJJ. Only a handful of athletes have ever accomplished it; in 2026, Tainan Dalpra and Gabi Pessanha both did.

Registration (2026)

Worlds 2027: As of October 2026, IBJJF had not announced dates or registration for the 2027 World Championship. We will add them to our IBJJF 2027 calendar as soon as they are published.

For reference, the 2026 registration windows ran as follows:

WindowDeadlineCost
EarlyMarch 22, 2026$153 USD
ExtendedApril 19, 2026$186 USD
FinalMay 18, 2026$204 USD

Affiliation deadline was May 5; registration and athlete corrections closed May 18, with the professor correction window May 19-20 and Check Day on May 22. Athletes needed an active IBJJF membership valid through the event dates and had to carry a government photo ID or their IBJJF membership card.

Black Belt Qualification

In 2026, black belt competitors needed 80 IBJJF ranking points to register for the World Championship, the highest point threshold of any IBJJF event. IBJJF's ranking page now lists 95 points for the World Championship. Points are accumulated through IBJJF-sanctioned events including Opens, Pans, Europeans, and Brasileiro. Former black belt world champions (gi or no-gi) and black belts who won an adult brown belt world title the previous season are exempt (IBJJF ranking rules).

For context, the Pan Championship requires 40 points -- the 2026 Worlds threshold was exactly double, ensuring the black belt brackets featured only proven competitors.

Competition Divisions

Age Groups

DivisionBirth YearBelt Levels
Juvenile 1Born 2010Blue, Purple
Juvenile 2Born 2009Blue, Purple
AdultBorn 2008 or earlierBlue, Purple, Brown, Black

Weight Classes

The World Championship uses IBJJF standard weight classes across all divisions. In 2026, weigh-ins were in pounds, immediately before each athlete's first match, with one attempt -- no second chances.

For a complete breakdown of all IBJJF weight classes for men and women across every age division, see our IBJJF weight classes guide.

Open Class (Absolute)

Athletes who placed 1st through 3rd in their weight division could register for the Open Class (Absolute); at adult black belt, every registered athlete was eligible. Colored-belt open classes ran on the same day as their weight divisions, while the black belt open-class brackets started Saturday and both finals were held Sunday, May 31. The Absolute is widely considered the most exciting division at Worlds, as it removes weight restrictions entirely.

Rules Overview

The World Championship follows standard IBJJF competition rules. Key points to review before competing:

  • Match duration varies by belt level and age division (black belt adult matches are 10 minutes)
  • Points system -- takedowns, sweeps, guard passes, mount, back control, and knee on belly all score. See the full IBJJF points system explained
  • Advantages and penalties break ties when points are level
  • Submission techniques vary by belt level -- review what is legal at your rank in our IBJJF rules guide
  • Gi requirements -- your Gi must pass IBJJF inspection. Review the IBJJF Gi rules and uniform guide to ensure compliance

Coaching: At Worlds 2026, only coaches with a valid IBJJF black belt membership were allowed into the designated coaching area. Review the complete IBJJF rules guide for coaching regulations.

Anti-Doping Testing

IBJJF contracted the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for drug testing at the 2026 World Championship. Testing covered blood and urine samples, following the WADA Prohibited Substances List. In September 2026, two USADA cases led IBJJF to revise the black belt results: Rider Zuchi's heavyweight gold went to Nicholas Maglicic, and Tayane Porfírio's two silver medals were reassigned (IBJJF).

Key details for competitors:

  • Testing can occur in and out of competition
  • First-instance decisions are not subject to CAS appeal
  • Results are published on the IBJJF website
  • Violations result in disqualification and potential suspension

Warning: Supplement contamination is a real risk at events with USADA testing. Many over-the-counter supplements contain trace amounts of prohibited substances. Verify any supplements through a third-party testing service like NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport well before competing.

Prize Money

The 2026 World Championship offered prize money for Black Belt Adult divisions:

Division Size1st Place Prize
2-8 athletes$7,000
9-16 athletes$8,000
17-32 athletes$9,000
33+ athletes$10,000

Parking

In 2026, parking was in Lots G11 and G6-G9 near the Pyramid:

  • Weekdays (until 5:30 PM): $15
  • Weekday evenings (after 5:30 PM): $10
  • Weekends: $10

Arrive early, especially on Black Belt days (Saturday and Sunday), as parking fills up quickly.

Travel Planning

Flights

Long Beach is well-served by multiple airports:

Long Beach Airport (LGB)

  • Closest airport, approximately 10 minutes from the venue
  • Smaller airport with limited carriers (JetBlue, Southwest, Delta)
  • Less crowded and easier to navigate than LAX
  • Best option if direct flights are available from your city

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

  • Major international hub, 30-45 minutes from Long Beach (traffic dependent)
  • Most flight options and often better pricing
  • Allow extra time for LA traffic, especially during afternoon rush hours

John Wayne Airport (SNA)

  • Orange County option, approximately 25-30 minutes from Long Beach
  • Good alternative if flights to LAX or LGB are expensive

Pro Tip: If flying into LAX, avoid booking arrival times between 3:00-7:00 PM. The drive from LAX to Long Beach can take over 90 minutes in rush hour traffic. Morning or late evening arrivals cut the drive to under 30 minutes.

Accommodation

Near the Venue (Recommended):

  • Golden Sails Hotel -- Less than one mile from CSULB, affordable and popular with competitors
  • Hotel Current -- 2-minute drive from the university, outdoor pool
  • Econo Lodge Long Beach I-405 -- Budget-friendly option in Long Beach's Eastside with complimentary breakfast
  • Hotels along Bellflower Blvd and Pacific Coast Highway offer proximity to the Pyramid

Downtown Long Beach:

  • More dining and nightlife options
  • 15-20 minute drive to the venue
  • Higher hotel quality but pricier
  • Good option if you want to explore the city

Budget Tips:

  • Book as early as possible -- hotels near CSULB fill up fast during Worlds week
  • Consider Airbnb for longer stays or team groups
  • Share accommodations with teammates to split costs
  • Weekday rates are typically lower than weekend rates

Getting Around

Rental Car:

  • Recommended if flying into LAX or SNA
  • Useful for grocery runs, visits to local BJJ gyms for a pre-competition session, and exploring Long Beach
  • Book in advance during peak season

Ride Share (Uber/Lyft):

  • Convenient if staying close to the venue
  • Can be expensive for multiple daily trips
  • Surge pricing possible during event hours

Long Beach Transit:

  • Bus routes serve the CSULB campus area
  • Metro Blue Line connects Long Beach to downtown LA
  • Less convenient than driving but workable if staying nearby

Competition Preparation Tips

Peaking for Worlds

The World Championship demands your best performance of the year. Training camp planning is critical:

12-8 Weeks Out:

  • High-volume training with hard sparring
  • Focus on strength and conditioning to build your base
  • Study opponents who may be in your bracket
  • Compete in a tune-up tournament if possible

8-4 Weeks Out:

  • Refine your A-game and sharpen specific techniques
  • Increase competition-pace sparring
  • Begin monitoring weight more closely
  • Focus on recovery between sessions

4-1 Weeks Out:

  • Reduce training volume while maintaining intensity
  • Position-specific drilling over free sparring
  • Finalize weight management plan
  • Mental preparation and visualization

Competition Week:

  • Light technical work only -- no hard sparring
  • Travel to Long Beach at least 1-2 days before your division competes
  • Acclimate to Pacific time zone if traveling from a different zone
  • Rest, hydrate, and focus on your game plan

Weight Management

  • Weigh-in details: Same-day weigh-in in competition Gi, immediately before your first match, one attempt only
  • Weight tracking: Monitor your weight throughout training camp, not just the final week
  • Avoid extreme cuts: Do not cut more than 3-5% of body weight. Performance matters more than competing a division lighter
  • Southern California heat: May in Long Beach averages 20-23 degrees Celsius (68-73 degrees Fahrenheit) with low humidity, but indoor venues and travel can cause unexpected dehydration

Pro Tip: Bring a portable scale and weigh yourself each morning during competition week. Knowing exactly where you stand each day removes stress and lets you make small adjustments rather than a last-minute scramble.

Game Planning

  • Review your bracket as soon as it is posted on bjjcompsystem.com (May 26 in 2026)
  • Study potential opponents via match footage on FloGrappling
  • Have a clear plan A and plan B for each position
  • Practice your tournament warm-up routine so it is automatic on competition day
  • Use a BJJ training app to log your preparation and identify patterns in your training
  • Read our first IBJJF tournament guide if this is your first major IBJJF event

Common Questions

Can I Compete at Worlds as My First Tournament?

Technically yes, but strongly not recommended. The World Championship has the deepest brackets and highest level of competition of any IBJJF event. Gain experience at local tournaments and regional Opens first. Read our first IBJJF tournament guide before entering any major championship.

How Many Matches Will I Have?

It depends entirely on your bracket size. Small brackets may mean 1-2 matches, while deep weight classes at popular belt levels can mean 5-7+ matches in a single day. Check bjjcompsystem.com once brackets are posted (May 26 in 2026).

What Is the Difference Between Worlds and No-Gi Worlds?

The World Championship (May 28-31 in 2026) is Gi-only. The No-Gi World Championship is a separate event held later in the year (December 10-12 in 2026) with submission grappling rules and no Gi requirement. They are distinct tournaments with separate registration.

What If I Miss Weight?

Disqualification from that division. If you placed in your weight class and registered for Open Class, you may still compete in the Absolute division.

Is There a Separate Masters Worlds?

Yes. The World Master IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship is a separate event for Masters-age competitors (30+). The main World Championship features Juvenile and Adult divisions only.

Where Can I Check My Bracket?

Brackets are posted on bjjcompsystem.com when IBJJF releases the schedule (May 26 in 2026). Search by name or division to find your bracket, mat assignment, and estimated match times.
