Update (October 2026): Worlds 2026 is over. Erich Munis and Gabi Pessanha won the open classes again in Long Beach, Pessanha also took super-heavy, and Tainan Dalpra won middle to complete the Grand Slam (full Worlds 2026 results). The 2027 Brasileiro has not been announced yet; our IBJJF 2027 calendar will list it when IBJJF does.
The 2026 IBJJF Brasileiro Jiu-Jitsu Championship — the third leg of the Grand Slam — wrapped May 3 at the Ginásio Poliesportivo José Correa in Barueri, São Paulo. Nearly 8,000 athletes competed across 623 divisions over a 10-day run, with adult black belts taking the mats on May 2-3. Alliance took the team title; Erich Munis and Gabi Pessanha won the male and female absolutes.

Alliance's win was driven by depth across belts and divisions — three of the nine male black belt golds (Almeida, Gabriel, Silveira) plus a strong colored-belt showing. Soldiers Jiu-Jitsu was the story of the men's black belt brackets, taking four titles including both the Super-Heavy weight class and the Open via Erich Munis.

Soldiers Jiu-Jitsu's male takeover
Soldiers Jiu-Jitsu walked away with four male black belt golds: Meyram Maquiné at Feather, Alex Munis at Medium-Heavy, Vinicius Liberati at Super-Heavy, and Erich Munis taking the Open over Gabriel Ribeiro by armbar. The headline matchup was inside the Soldiers room itself — Liberati and Erich Munis met in the Super-Heavy final, with Liberati winning 3-2 by advantages and ending Munis's 48-match streak. Munis bounced back the same weekend to take the absolute. Two finals, two trophies, one team.
AOJ owned the women's brackets
AOJ collected four female black belt golds — Mayssa Bastos (Rooster), Ashlee and Mia Funegra (Light-Feather and Feather), and Maria Vicentini (Medium-Heavy). The Funegra sisters going back-to-back in adjacent weight classes was one of the standout moments of the women's day.
Gabi Pessanha, double gold (again)
Gabi Pessanha closed Brasileiro with the Super-Heavy and Open Class double, beating Sarah Galvão in the absolute final after Galvão had already taken Light gold for Atos. Pessanha went into Worlds four weeks later as the clear favorite at super-heavy and won the same double again in Long Beach.
Tainan Dalpra, again
Tainan Dalpra defended his Middleweight title for AOJ, his third Grand Slam gold of the season after Europeans and Pans. Four weeks later he won Worlds in Long Beach (May 28-31), his fourth world title, to complete the 2026 Grand Slam.
A rookie-belt gold at Rooster
Ítalo Almeida — a first-year black belt — won at Rooster for Alliance, one of two new names at the top of the male podiums (the other being Soldiers' Meyram Maquiné). Always worth watching when the smallest male division turns over.
What Brasileiro Meant for Worlds
Brasileiro is the third leg of the IBJJF Grand Slam — Europeans (January), Pans (March), Brasileiro (April-May), Worlds (late May). For black belts, it was the last ranking event before the World Championship, and with an 80-point Worlds threshold in 2026, a Brasileiro medal could be the result that got an athlete over the line. IBJJF's ranking page now lists 95 points for Worlds and 40 for Brasileiro itself (up from 30).

Did You Know: Former black belt World Champions (gi or no-gi) are exempt from the Worlds ranking requirement, which IBJJF now lists at 95 points for adult black belts (80 in 2026). Everyone else builds points across Opens, Europeans, Pans, and Brasileiro, with the current 2026-27 season counting triple.
About the Venue
The Ginásio Poliesportivo José Correa in Barueri (São Paulo metro) has hosted the modern Brasileiro since the event moved out of Rio. It's the IBJJF's largest annual venue by athlete count — 2026 distributed roughly 2,200 medals across 623 brackets.
For competitors and traveling spectators, Barueri is roughly 30 km west of São Paulo center. IBJJF has not yet announced the dates or venue for the 2027 Brasileiro; our IBJJF 2027 calendar will add it once it does.
