Alliance's win was driven by depth across belts and divisions — three of the nine male black belt golds (Almeida, Gabriel, Silveira) plus a strong colored-belt showing. Soldiers Jiu-Jitsu was the story of the men's black belt brackets, taking four titles including both the Super-Heavy weight class and the Open via Erich Munis.
Storylines from Black Belt Sunday
Soldiers Jiu-Jitsu's male takeover
Soldiers Jiu-Jitsu walked away with four male black belt golds: Meyram Maquiné at Feather, Alex Munis at Medium-Heavy, Vinicius Liberati at Super-Heavy, and Erich Munis taking the Open over Gabriel Ribeiro by armbar. The headline matchup was inside the Soldiers room itself — Liberati and Erich Munis met in the Super-Heavy final, with Liberati winning 3-2 by advantages and ending Munis's 48-match streak. Munis bounced back the same weekend to take the absolute. Two finals, two trophies, one team.
AOJ owned the women's brackets
AOJ collected four female black belt golds — Mayssa Bastos (Rooster), Ashlee and Mia Funegra (Light-Feather and Feather), and Maria Vicentini (Medium-Heavy). The Funegra sisters going back-to-back in adjacent weight classes was one of the standout moments of the women's day.
Gabi Pessanha, double gold (again)
Gabi Pessanha closed Brasileiro with the Super-Heavy and Open Class double, beating Sarah Galvão in the absolute final after Galvão had already taken Light gold for Atos. Pessanha goes into Worlds three weeks later as the unquestioned favorite at +79kg and a real threat in the absolute.
Tainan Dalpra, again
Tainan Dalpra defended his Middleweight title for AOJ, extending a run that has him as one of the betting favorites at every IBJJF major. With Worlds in Long Beach four weeks later, his Brasileiro form was the loudest momentum signal heading into the May 28-31 stretch.
A rookie-belt gold at Rooster
Ítalo Almeida — a first-year black belt — won at Rooster for Alliance, one of two new names at the top of the male podiums (the other being Soldiers' Meyram Maquiné). Always worth watching when the smallest male division turns over.
What Brasileiro Means for Worlds
Brasileiro is the third leg of the IBJJF Grand Slam — Europeans (January), Pans (March), Brasileiro (April-May), Worlds (late May). For black belts, it's the last ranking event before the World Championship, and the 80-point qualification threshold for Worlds is set high enough that a Brasileiro medal is often the deciding result.
Of the 2026 Brasileiro champions above, every name is also expected at Worlds in Long Beach. For division-by-division Worlds prediction breakdowns, see our Worlds 2026 preview and the black belt contenders analysis.
Did You Know: Former IBJJF World Champions at black belt are exempt from the 80-point qualification threshold for Worlds. Everyone else accumulates points across Opens, Europeans, Pans, and Brasileiro through the year.
About the Venue
The Ginásio Poliesportivo José Correa in Barueri (São Paulo metro) has hosted the modern Brasileiro since the event moved out of Rio. It's the IBJJF's largest annual venue by athlete count — 2026 distributed roughly 2,200 medals across 623 brackets.
For competitors and traveling spectators, Barueri is roughly 30 km west of São Paulo center. The 2027 edition is expected to return to the same venue on a similar late-April calendar.
Common Questions
Who won the male absolute?
Erich Munis (Soldiers Jiu-Jitsu) won the male Open Class, finishing Gabriel Ribeiro by armbar in the final. Munis's teammate Vinicius Liberati was Super-Heavy champion in a separate bracket (where Liberati beat Munis 3-2 on advantages).
Who won the female absolute?
Gabi Pessanha (Infight Jiu-Jitsu) won the female Open Class, defeating Sarah Galvão (Atos) in the final after taking Super-Heavy earlier in the weekend.
Which team won?
Alliance won the team title with 840.5 points, ahead of Gracie Barra (643.0) and GF Team (509.5).
Where does Brasileiro fit in the Grand Slam?
Third — after Europeans (January) and Pans (March), before Worlds (late May). See our 2026 IBJJF schedule for the full calendar.
Is Brasileiro gi or no-gi?
Gi only. The IBJJF runs separate no-gi events.
Key Takeaway
Alliance won the team race on depth; Soldiers Jiu-Jitsu owned the men's black belt brackets behind Erich Munis's absolute win; AOJ and Gabi Pessanha defined the women's day. With Worlds 2026 running May 28-31 in Long Beach, every name on the Brasileiro podium is now a Worlds bracket variable.
